Hunts
FA Senior Cup Quarter Final – Saturday 3rd February
Alconbury
0 - Yaxley 1
Cuckoos
through to semi-finals …
As
fellow UCL clubs St. Neots and
Huntingdon
Town
bowed out of the Hunts Senior Cup to Peterborough League opposition, a second
half goal from Cuckoos top goal scorer Mark Paul put Yaxley through to the
semi-finals. The first half saw Yaxley not really get into gear as Alconbury
made most of the running but never really threatened the visitors
goal. The home team played seriously physical football which seemed to trouble
Cuckoos in most areas of the pitch and with 3 key mid-fielders absent they found
it difficult to live up to their league standing with plenty of forced errors.
It
wasn’t until the hour mark that Yaxley finally started to dominate and string
their passes into meaningful opportunities and making the home defence work. In
the 78th minute Alconbury finally cracked
as Mark Paul latched onto a superb ball played over the top of the home defence
and slotted it into the net. Alconbury rallied but
to no avail sending Yaxley into the semi-finals.
After
the match, manager Gary Clipston said that as expected Alconbury
had put up a spirited performance but that his team got the result they needed.
Yaxley
travel to S&L
Corby
on Tuesday night to replay the 2nd round League Cup fixture that was
abandoned (0-0) on 28th January due to a frozen pitch.
