Potton United
2 Yaxley 2
Saturday, 08 September 2007
Potton picked up a valuable point after
equalising in the dying seconds at The Hollow, depriving Yaxley of what looked
like (on paper at least) a good bet for 3 points. With The Cuckoos still missing
skipper Jimmy Dean and Hamish Curtis standing in on duty at left back, manager
Gary Clipston was counting on returning Dominic Henson to add a bit of magic and
strike power.
Potton took a twentieth minute lead via Tom Beech but Henson duly delivered,
levelling the score with a 41st minute goal.
Potton's new look side showed that their
confidence is growing, forcing much of the play in the second half and requiring
Cuckoos 'keeper John Feetham to make a number of critical saves. Dan Fountain
continued to cause problems down the left flank, whilst Mark Paul came close
several times and Ricky Hailstone forced the home 'keeper to parry a powerful 25
yard drive, matching his opposite number until the 64th minute when he fumbled
Mark Paul's innocuous low drive and it dribbled across the line.
Potton pegged Yaxley back for the last 10 minutes and in the final minute, John
Mulholland saved the day for the home team., heading home from a corner
With the second highest "goals scored" tally in the league but a goal
difference of just +1, Gary Clipston will no doubt be focusing on how to keep 'em
out. Rumours abound that several defensive players are returning to Leading
Drove ... we'll just have to wait and see but in the meantime, Clipston hopes to
have Danny Steward back in a Cuckoos shirt in the next few days
Despite taking only a point from the game, The Cuckoos moved up to 6th in the
league as other top 3rd teams had bad days at the office.
Yaxley travel to Holbeach on Wednesday for a tough
mid-week league game.
