United Counties League - Premier
Division Tuesday, 16 October 2007 The heavy rain did little to dampen the enthusiasm of the players and for 40 minutes, both teams attacked and counter attacked creating chances but no goals. In the 41st minute, the visitors attacked down the left flank, cutting the ball back to the edge of the 18 yard box for a totally unmarked and unchallenged Matt Lunn to fire powerfully past a stretching John Feetham into the top corner of the net. The visitors had their number 5 dismissed just before the half-time whistle resulting from a late challenge on Feetham. After the break there really was only ever going to be one winner as the Cuckoos quickly brought on the pacey duo of Mark Paul and Elio Salerno who caused problem after problem for the visitors defence. As the game progressed, the Cuckoos pushed further forward and skipper Jimmy Dean earned a penalty from being brought down in the box following a penetrating run from midfield. But the visiting 'keeper guessed right and turned Ricky Hailstone's penalty shot round the post. The Cuckoos continued to mount the pressure and it was skipper Jimmy Dean who restored the deficit after 72 minutes with Anthony Thomas crowning an excellent home debut as he beat the 'keeper in the air to head the match winner with 10 minutes to go. Clipston's tactical change was the catalyst for the win and no doubt he'll be confident that new signing Anthony Thomas will add power and strength to the squad and help secure another win when Desborough Town (the only remaining team to have not yet lost a league game) visit Leading Drove on Saturday - 3pm KO. Yaxley: John Feetham, Sam Kingston, Matthew Parrott, Chris Lenton, Anthony Thomas, Danny Steward, Ricky Hailstone, Jimmy Dean (Capt), Sam Bate, Dan Fountain (Elio Salerno), Mario Palazzo (Mark Paul) Attendance: 75 |
